Gibsonville Elementary School
Gibsonville, North Carolina

Adams Group in partnership with Sharon Graeber A.I.A. and Henry Sanoff, A.I.A. has been awarded the design Gibsonville Elementary School. This 1920's era facility has been in desperate need of repair for years. Due to the significant amount of renovation needed, the decision was made to construct a new replacement facility on the existing site. Working closely with the staff, administrators and teachers, a plan has been developed that will provide teaching clusters for each grade. The design incorporates the use of separate wings. The first wing will house grades Kindergarten through 2nd grade and the second wing will contain grades 3rd through 5th. Each grade cluster is composed of L-shaped classrooms connected to a team teaching resource area. Each classroom has access to a private outdoor learning area. Centrally located are the support areas such as media and computer center, art and music classrooms and the administrative offices. The original gymnasium which has sentimental significance in the area due to the fact that the famous North Carolina State University Women's Basketball Coach Kay Yow, attended and played basketball at Gibsonville Elementary School, will be renovated and still exist on the site for school and community use. After several site location options were developed and discussed, the project team decided to locate the new school near the existing school to promote integrated community activities as well as present a new school image to the adjacent town center. Construction on the new facility is scheduled to be complete by Spring 2006. Total construction cost is estimated to be $12,000,000.
