Piazza
Bergamo
Greenville, South Carolina
Commemorating
Greenville's sister city of Bergamo in Italy, this urban plaza became
the new focal point within the main street of downtown Greenville. This
three phase – 120,000 sq. ft. project includes restaurants, theaters,
offices, retail areas, and terraced housing. This unique urban plaza is
a favorite of the community. The plaza, designed in collaboration with
Bergamo architect Laura Sonzoni, provides the organization concept for
this development. The plaza is conceived as two interacting spaces. The
first is hard surface for community events. The second is heavily landscaped
and provides an urban park for residents and office users. The plaza hosts
craft fairs, art festivals, and the city's Fourth of July celebration.
The project received the International Sister Cities Award in 1990.
