Physical Plant and Public Safety Facilities
University of North Carolina Charlotte—UNCC

Charlotte, North Carolina

Located within a heavily wooded, hilly terrain on the north edge of the campus, the 20-acre project includes 16,000 square feet of facilities, management offices, a 20,000 square foot physical plant, 10,000 square feet for a service and recycling compound, 11,000 square feet for receiving and stores and 15,000 square feet dedicated to security and public safety headquarters, in addition to employee and service fleet parking.

The security and public safety headquarters includes office space, training room, locker room, showers and a secure parking area.

Sustainable design practices are incorporated into the facility design. Some of these elements are: reduced site disturbance and erosion control, minimizing numbers of buildings to reduce land footprint and consolidation of systems, use of natural daylighting for building interiors, energy and resources efficiency, waste reduction (both post-occupancy and during construction), and use of sustainable building projects.

The Adams Group worked in conjunction with the University to develop and test building design configurations to maximize daylight into workspaces. In keeping with the newly adopted campus master planned and guidelines, the facility is designed to maintain a civic presence to the campus and to complement the existing buildings.
