Chapel
Hill Bible Church
Chapel Hill, North Carolina
The
congregation of this non-denominational church recognized the impact and
significance that a new church could have on their 33-acre site in suburban
Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The design is the result of a collaborative
design process and an exploration of sacred space. Inspiration for the
projectÕs design derives from the evangelical tents that were used earlier
this century. The structural system uses this concept in the simple roof
design of the sanctuary. A tent structure is further reflected through
minimal exterior detail. Light was a major consideration in the design.
A central cylinder that penetrates the roof shines light in the chancel
giving an overall feeling of sacredness and spirituality. The lighting
concept employs the belief that light represents God shining in the darkness
thus providing a metaphor for divine illumination. The design strikes
a balance between preservation of the physical features of the site while
differentiating between and the sacred and profane. This was achieved
by placing the circular form at the most sacred place in the project,
while geometric forms were created for classrooms and administrative areas.
The angular wall pierces the cylinder and accentuates the transformation
from the secular to a sacred place. Only through the transition of light
are these areas integrated. This complex invites the Chapel Hill Community
to cross the threshold from the quotidian to the transcendent. It is invitation
to seek illumination under the impact of light.
