Myers Park Traditional Elementary
Charlotte, North Carolina

This 7 M project envisions a new master plan for this in-town historic site. Design objectives included developing the exterior in a manner that compliments the existing facility while conserving its distinguished character, providing a new school entry image and provide a shared theater facility with Queens University. The addition of media and classrooms double the capacity of the existing facility and provide over 800 students district standards for this elementary school. While the final design expresses dialogues between the historic and the contemporary, and materials and technology, it displays a concern for both environmental and historic conservation as top priorities. The overall message that this project conveys is an urban neighborhood school that is historically preserved and sensitively extended can enhance education of larger student population while respecting the neighborhood scale and character.
