Sugar
Creek Library and Police Station
Charlotte, North Carolina
The
project is located in a blighted retail center in North Carolina. The
goal defined by the design team in collaboration with the client was to
introduce a central civic core while establishing an architectural presence
in an area characterized by an undefined urban fabric. The building massing
reflects the inner life and activities while conveying a non-verbal message
to the neighborhood by having the community hall stands apart from the
rest of the building, thereby creating a center for the community. Dialogues
of materials and surfaces are established by the use of diagonal entrances
and textured brick and glass. Circulation and wayfinding aspects are emphasized
by creating a multi-fronted plaza while defining routes leading to the
entrances.
